It’s been almost a year since the initial introduction of the Butterfly THREE-STAR G40+ Ball and the Balls are available all over the globe. In professional table tennis, the G40+ has seen service for almost two years, and receives high praise from pros and amateurs alike.

Butterfly Sales Director Sebastian Rangs summarizes:

„Its exceptional quality was a major factor in gaining acceptance among other celluloid-free balls in professional table tennis as well as among amateur players and clubs. The Butterfly THREE-STAR G40+ Ball has become the main competition ball for many clubs since.”

“And with good reason” most players and organizers would agree.

Praise from Professionals

The Butterfly THREE-STAR G40+ Ball is becoming more and more popular among many european Top clubs and international events.

After the world junior championships (2015 and 2016), the french table tennis federation decided after intensive screening for the THREE-STAR G40+ balls to be used as competition ball in all national top-events of the French Table Tennis Federation (FFTT) for the next 4 years. Moreover it was also the offical ball at the recent EUROPE TOP 16 in Antibes.

What makes the THREE-STAR G40+ so special?

The material thickness of regular balls varies between different points on the ball – most notably between seam and poles, where the ball is thickest and the areas inbetween with reduced thickness. This variation causes the ball surface to exhibit uneven hardness and – depending on the area making contact with the surface – uneven bounce on the table.

The uneven hardness, caused by uneven thickness of inner ball material is also the main course for the ongoing plight of regular “plastic” balls – the high rate of breakages and damage.

The Butterfly THREE STAR G40+ Ball is different. A new manufacturing process allows the precise molding of synthetic material, producing a superbly round ball with even wall thickness. As a result, the G40+ Balls features even hardness on all points of the ball and a consistent bounce – not to mention low breakings as the durability is also increased. An even bounce means a palpable reduction of those “small errors” in every players’ game and it allows for most precise play.

Saying goodbye to celluloid proves lengthy process

Sebastian Rangs, responsible for distribution in Europe is satisfied with the performance of the “made in Germany” Balls. He admits the ball faces challenges other than quality:

„If we look at the material used and the manufacturing process, the Butterfly G40+ Ball is not only a new product, but truly innovative: Its playing characteristics are unique and a little different to both celluloid and regular plastic balls. The main challenge this ball faces is not its competition, but rather the expectations of some players.“

It seems a number of amateur players expect the new balls to perform exactly the same way the old ones did, which is not the case. Players need to be open for the small adjustment in their game, insisting on the way things have been in the past leads to a dead end. Professional players have already adapted their game as they quickly became aware that going back to celluloid simply would not happen.

Heavy-duty training – MASTER QUALITY G40+

Talking about training: As some other manufacturers still require players to practise using pricy competition balls, Butterfly offers a cost effective alternative: The MASTER QUALITY G40+ training ball. In terms of quality there is little to no gap between training balls and THREE-STAR competition balls, the lower pricing is rather the result of Butterfly’s decision not to apply for ITTF approvial of the MASTER QUALITY ball, which – come to think of it – is really not neccessary for a training ball. In terms of roundness and overall quality, the MASTER QUALITY performs the same way the THREE STAR G40+ does.

Easy and affordable  – EASY BALL 40+

Completing the lineup of plastic balls “Made in Germany” is the EASY BALL 40+. Aimed mainly at hobby players looking for a literally “easy” way to play table tennis, its roundness and durability make the EASY BALL equally suited for beginners, but also for Multiball or robot training of young players in clubs.
