On September 1st Japan’s Ai Fukuhara and Chiang Hung Chieh from Taiwan married. It was made official at a joint statement of Ai Fukuhara, who just won the bronze medal at the Olympic games in Rio and her husband, the taiwanese national player Chiang Hung Chieh in the “ANA Intercontinental Hotel Tokyo”. Chiang too had attended the Olympics.
Both met in 2014, when Chiang Hung Chieh cared for Ai Fukuhara while she had to deal with injury and was working on her comeback.
They relationship grew since then and both decided to marry after the Olympic Games. Their marriage was made official on September 1st in Tokyo.
Ai Fukuhara about her husband:
„Now matter how small the issue or my mood is, he always pays attention to me and supports me in everything. He gives me a most wonderful feeling”.
After asking about her future plans, Fukuhara states her intention of continuing her career in table tennis:
„As a female athlete the thought appeared of such a step towards family life influencing the time and effort I can put into table tennis. But since my husband is also a professional player, we can share the time involved and there will be no reduction of my efforts. I will continue to work hard on my career as professional athlete. I am honored if I can be an example for younger players in that regard that table tennis and family life can be combined.”
„On the other hand”, Ai Fukuhara continues, „for 24 years, everything in my life has revolved around table tennis. To be husband and wife and care for ourselves is completely new to us. We both need some time to adjust before we get back to professional table tennis”.
We wish them both best success in their private and professional endeavors!
